As a Senior Behavior Change Designer, you will work in the space between applied behavioral science and human-centered design, blending scientific rigor, expertise in models of psychology and creativity to design products. In this role, you will collaborate on multi-disciplinary projects and ensure our work is built from solid science and research.

We have offices in Boston, MA and Portsmouth, NH offices, but this role can be either local or remote. If you are curious, collaborative, and confident with high emotional intelligence and a passion for empowering others, Mad*Pow might be a great place for you.

Experience and Skills

What you’ll do:

You are committed to applying theory, evidence, and rigor to a human-centered design process, and passionate about the impacts of digital solutions to improve health, wealth, and wellbeing. You are adept at advocating for scientific evidence and methods in a consultative, commercial development environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead research and design projects centered on changing real-world health and financial behaviors
  • Provide guidance and expertise on more transactional-focused work (e.g., adoption/uptake, engagement, task completion)
  • Translate theory and evidence to intervention design strategies and product/service components (e.g., features, functions, interactions, content, and messaging)
  • Establish appropriate outcome measures and change objectives
  • Lead client and internal team meetings, presentations, and workshops as appropriate

What you’ll need:

  • Background
    • 3-5 years of experience designing behavioral interventions in one or more domains
    • Bachelor’s in social science field such as behavioral science, psychology, sociology, economics, or public health, OR a design-related degree combined with applied career experience in behavior science
  • Skills
    • Ability to design and conduct research to understand a problem space and population(s) through the lens of a behavior change framework
    • Experience developing logic models, theory of change, or causal diagrams to visually communicate complex problems and/or intervention logic
    • Experience using frameworks such as the Behavior Change Wheel (COM-B) or intervention mapping, and applying theories such as the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation to design interventions
    • Skilled at translating research findings into intervention strategies and then into design concepts and product/service components
    • Strong communication skills with an ability to translate complex concepts to non-expert audiences like clients, research participants, or webinar/conference attendees
    • Ability to navigate ambiguity and solve problems in a fast-paced environment
    • Experience working in an environment where formative and summative evaluations are part of the process is a plus
