As our Senior Organizational Designer, you will help to improve the design maturity of Mad*Pow’s clients by helping teams strengthen and scale their design practices. This individual should have enough experience with leading teams through change to able to support and lead projects as part of our Design Transformation practice. This might look like training teams on design methods, helping Design collaborate more effectively with Product or Development teams, or reworking processes to make design more impactful.

This is a full-time position to be based out of our Boston, MA or Portsmouth, NH offices, but will consider remote working arrangements for the right candidate. Experience and Skills

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct research to better understand the current state of the design organization (stakeholder interviews, ethnography/observation, surveys, collaborative workshops, organizational mapping or analysis, etc.).
  • Create and present recommendations for practice improvements.
  • Help leaders understand tradeoffs between different approaches and develop roadmaps for change initiatives.
  • Prepare teams for change, including guiding leaders through the process, crafting a compelling story to drive new ways of working, developing a measurement strategy for tracking adoption and impact, or preparing communications or other material to support the change.
  • Execute small- and/or large-scale changes within a team or organization (training teams, implementing change initiative, coaching leaders and managers, navigating resistance, and tracking outcomes).

What You’ll Need:

  • 2+ years of experience leading design teams through changes to the way they work. This might look like process improvements, building/instilling new skillsets within teams, shifting organizational structures, etc.
  • Required Skills
    • Understanding of how design teams work to assess the strengths and improvement areas of a design team or department, and to guide them towards a more effective and human-centered way of working. You may have led a design team in a large organization or consulted extensively with design clients.
    • Deep understanding of people and what drives them to want to make things better.
    • Familiarity with human-centered design and co-creative processes. You understand how to design for the conditions that change behavior and create impact.
    • Experience leading teams through change either as an internal change agent within an organization or as a consultant. You know when to put on your expert hat to drive clients towards a better way of working, and when to use a more collaborative/co-creative approach.
    • Ability to work across all levels of the organization - whether it’s influencing leaders, collaborating with mid-level managers, or communicating new ideas to staff on the front-line.
    • Ability to work well with others - on both the client side and with colleagues. We hire individuals who can build strong rapport with clients, design and deliver collaborative workshops, or can jump on a Slack call with other Mad*Pow folks to strategize on next steps.
    • Multi-talented and can augment your organizational design expertise with another area of Mad*Pow’s disciplines, such as experience research, experience strategy, service design, experience design, behavior change design, or other related field.
  • Nice To Have Skills
    • Expertise in one of the following areas: Change management, agile/lean practices, Design Ops, team development, coaching, or training.
    • Well-versed in remote collaboration technology - such as Webex, Miro, and Mural.
    • Able to dress up occasionally and meet our clients (some travel in non-pandemic times).
