Since 2000, we have leveraged strategic design and the psychology of motivation to create innovative experiences and compelling digital solutions that are good for people and good for business.

As our Strategic UX Lead, you will work to make the complicated feel simple, envision and create exceptional experiences, guide projects and teams, innovate under imperfect conditions, expertly facilitate collaborative design sessions, and lead clients and teammates toward delivering elegant digital design solutions. You are innovative, curious, experimental and always thinking about the human on the other end of your design. We are seeking a talented, passionate and multifaceted designer who has skills and determination and is excited to take on new challenges and grow professionally at an established, but growing design agency.

We are looking for candidates who can be based out of our Boston, MA or Portsmouth, NH offices, but will consider remote working arrangements for the right candidate. If you are curious, collaborative, and confident with high emotional intelligence and a passion for empowering others, you might be Mad*Pow’s next addition.

What you’ll do:

  • Leading, managing, or providing senior experience design leadership on large and/or highly complex client engagements while ensuring profitable and high-quality output
  • Creating the strategy, flows, information architecture diagrams, and interaction concepts (i.e.: wireframes) for websites, web applications, tablets, and mobile devices
  • Working with researchers to plan qualitative design research and insight generation, with a focus on acquiring feedback that can directly inform design decisions
  • Leading project teams that include other disciplines such as content strategy, visual design, and development to align output to a project’s strategic experience goals
  • Planning and expertly facilitating design workshops or sprints with our clients in order to gain alignment and develop new solutions
  • Rationalizing and explaining design decisions based on research, best practices, and psychology through storytelling, often with client executives
  • Providing feedback on new project plans and activities with the ability to identify which deliverables or activities will deliver the most value
  • Note: This is a highly billable individual contributor role with a focus on project leadership; we're looking for someone who thrives being on-the-ground and leading the work with sleeves rolled up, putting out exceptional deliverables.

Experience and Skills

What you’ll need:

  • Background
    • 7+ years of experience in a User Experience Design or Strategy role
  • Skills
    • In-depth understanding of current trends in experience design, including research-inspired design, lean approaches, responsive processes, etc.
    • Expert understanding of digital design best practices and principles such as, but not limited to, accessibility, performance and usability considerations
    • Familiarity with designing within an agile or rapid iterative process, including various ways to prototype ideas for testing or client approval
    • Ability to explain and articulate the connection from research to design decisions through storytelling and effective client presentations
    • Confidence facilitating client meetings and working sessions, collaborating directly with client executives on overall strategy, tradeoffs, and direction for the project
    • Highly collaborative and eager to participate, able to effectively manage both yours and others’ time alongside project deadlines
    • Exceptional strategic thinking and ability to hone in on client priorities and understand how they influence design decisions
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Keen understanding of how to work in a professional services environment that focuses on providing value for clients
    • Big plus: Service design expertise and experience creating or contributing to strategic artifacts like journey maps, service blueprints, playbooks and value prop design, etc.
  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency in some of the tools we often use:
    • Figma
    • Sketch
    • Adobe XD
    • Mural
    • Invision

Maybe you’ve held titles like Product Designer, Digital Design Strategist, Interaction Designer, etc. -- the key is, you bring a consultant mindset and deep expertise in human-centered design with a passion for digital design specifically and for directing project teams to brilliant outcomes. The title and seniority of this position will be flexible based on what background experiences and perspectives each candidate brings to the position.
