Since 2000, we have leveraged strategic design and the psychology of motivation to create innovative experiences and compelling digital solutions that are good for people and good for business.

Mad*Pow is looking for a VP/Principal of Behavior Change Design to help lead the evolution of our behavior change design practice. Over the last decade, Mad*Pow has been at the forefront of behavior change design and as more organizations embrace the power of behavioral science, there is more opportunity than ever to help our clients integrate psychology and the science of motivation with research, design, and development efforts to improve both experiences and outcomes.

We have offices in Boston, MA and Portsmouth, NH, but this role can be local or remote. We are highly collaborative; we look to and trust each other for support and continuous learning, so we seek candidates with high levels of expertise and low levels of ego. If you are curious, collaborative, and confident with high emotional intelligence and a passion for empowering others, Mad*Pow might be a great place for you.

What you’ll do:

As the VP/Principal of Behavior Change Design, you will work at the intersection of applied behavioral science and human centered design, blending scientific rigor with expertise in models of psychology and experience innovation. In this role, you’ll help lead and evolve Mad*Pow’s behavior change practice, building on a foundational legacy of groundbreaking behavior change design thinking. You’ll collaborate on multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring the application of theory and evidence to Mad*Pow’s behaviorally informed design engagements to understand human behavior and design interventions that change behavior to improve health, wealth, and wellbeing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading research and design projects centered on changing real world behaviors and outcomes, modeling successful project leadership for others and multiplying the power of the team through direction, vision, and delegation, and occasionally as a hands-on practitioner
  • Providing guidance and expertise on transactional-focused work (e.g., adoption/uptake, engagement, task completion)
  • Translating theory and evidence to intervention design strategies and product/service components (e.g., features, functions, interactions, content, and messaging)
  • Leading client and internal team meetings, presentations, and workshops as appropriate
  • Supporting business development efforts with documentation, scoping, and pitching
  • Collaborating with senior leadership to drive vision and strategy for the behavior change design practice while providing personal and professional mentorship to more junior colleagues in support of that vision
  • Facilitating internal process improvement, knowledge sharing, and integration of multiple strategic objectives to drive innovation for the practice and the organization

Experience and Skills

Qualities we’re looking for:

  • 7+ years of experience in relevant fields
  • Degree in social science field such as behavioral science, psychology, sociology, economics, decision science, or public health, or a design-related degree combined with applied career experience in behavior science, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to design and conduct research to understand a problem space and population(s) through the lens of several behavior change frameworks
  • Experience developing logic models, theory of change, and/or causal diagrams to visually communicate complex problems and intervention logic
  • Experience using frameworks such as the Behavior Change Wheel (COM-B) or intervention mapping, and applying theories such as the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation to design interventions
  • Experience translating research findings into intervention strategies and then into design concepts and product/service components
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to translate complex concepts for non-expert audiences like clients, research participants, or webinar/conference attendees
  • Experience working in an environment where formative and summative evaluations are part of the process
  • Experience managing or directing multidisciplinary teams of creative practitioners with proven ability to empower said teams in aligned autonomy
  • A growth mindset and flexible optimism that enables you to be adaptable and collaborative, bringing resiliency and tenacity to thrive in ambiguous situations and solve thorny problems in a fast-paced environment
  • Confidence advocating for scientific evidence and methods in a consultative, commercial development environment
  • Proven experience as a connector and relationship-builder with whom clients and internal colleagues enjoy collaborating
  • Strategic and creative thinking skills with the curiosity to stay abreast of shifting best practices and industry dynamics
  • Significant agency or consulting experience with demonstrated understanding of professional services environments that focus on providing value for clients in balance with human centered innovation
  • Willingness to dress up once in a while and impress our clients, with occasional travel when safe in-person collaboration is desired
  • An authentic passion for what you do and for sharing it with others via education, mentorship, and process innovation
